OSEA MALIBU: RED ALGAE MASK REVIEW

By: Skin Care Ox

Written By: Diane Elizabeth K. // First Published: 04/15/2020

OSEA Malibu’s Red Algae Mask is a little known anti-acne organic facial mask which claims to gently reduce breakouts and blackheads without stripping the skin of its natural, protective oils. Can this pretty pink mask really do all that it says it can? Are the ingredients in the Red Algae Mask actually rated as safe, organic, and all natural? Can an acne mask really be effective without causing dryness? Well, to get to the bottom of those questions and more, we put the Red Algae Mask to the test for a two week trial! During our trial, we researched each and every ingredient, analyzed hundreds of real customer reviews, and faithfully used the product as instructed in order to bring you this comprehensive review.

At the end of our review trial, OSEA’s Red Algae facial mask earned high scores in almost every category. Not only is the formula made with a blend of clean, natural, and organic ingredients, it also delivers on many of its promises of producing clearer skin. The mask is made with potent anti-acne ingredients (like French clays, fermented beet-derived lactic acid, willow bark, tea tree oil, juniper oil, and rosemary) as well as ingredients designed to hydrate the skin (like red algae, jojoba oil, and sesame oil). It’s got a noticeable, but not overwhelming herbal scent (mainly tea tree oil) and has a refreshing “cooling” sensation on the skin. The cream mask doesn’t fully dry on the skin, which helps to leave skin feeling super soft after application. Best of all, this mask is brainlessly easy to use. Just apply a thin layer of this pre-mixed mask on your face 2x per week (or apply directly to acne as an overnight spot treatment) to see good results. Luckily, you don’t have to take our word for it! Customers from retailers across the web have also left hundreds of glowing reviews for this anti-blemish mask (check out our summary below).

Our reviews are organized into three categories: The Clean Ingredient Score (is the product made with clean ingredients?), Product Design & Effectiveness Score (does the product actually work?), and the Online Customer Review Score (what is everyone else saying?). Combined, this review should provide everything you need to decide if the Red Algae Mask is right for you. Enjoy!

CLEAN INGREDIENT SCORE
a_score_icon_t-min

Osea Malibu’s Red Algae Mask earns a Clean Ingredient Score of an “A” for its acne fighting organic and all natural formula. This facial mask is non-gmo, vegan, 100% natural, and cruelty free. The Red Algae Mask is made with 30 ingredients of which 11 are certified organic ingredients (red algae, glycerin, jojoba oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, grapefruit peel oil, juniper oil, cypress seed oil, and green tea extract). The Atmosphere Protection Cream lost a few points for its preservative system, potassium sorbate. Potassium sorbate is a naturally-derived food-preservative with links to skin irritation in high concentrations. Osea Malibu uses very low concentrations of potassium sorbate in the Red Algae Mask formula (in fact, potassium sorbate is the very last ingredient listed on the formula–indicating a low quantity relative to the other ingredients on the list). During our two week review, the Skin Care Ox team experienced no signs of irritation while trialing the Red Algae Mask.

Clean Ingredient Summary

| 100% NATURAL | VEGAN | NON-GMO | CRUELTY FREE |

Top Clean Ingredients

  • Red Algae Extract: Chlorophyll containing ocean dwelling organisms. Contains a plethora of potent vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Known for its ability to help skin retain a lot of moisture (an alternative to hyaluronic acid).
  • Montmorillonite Clay/French Pink Clay: A naturally pink earth clay which gently absorbs excess oil, sebum, and dirt from the pores. Packed with minerals and helps to keep acne-causing bacteria at bay.
  • Illite Clay/French Red Clay: A naturally red earth clay that is rich in iron oxide (which gives the clay its red color). Beneficial for clearing pores.
  • Rosemary Leaf Oil: Rosemary oil has a blend of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-fungal properties. Because of this, rosemary oil is often used as an anti-blemish treatment for its ability to fight acne-causing bacteria, balance sebum, and soothe irritation.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Often criticized for its signature scent, tea tree oil is a powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-fungal agent. Tea tree oil is most often found in skin care remedies designed for oily, acne-prone, and blemish-prone skin.
  • White Thyme Oil: A highly medicinal oil known for its antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Used commonly in cosmetics (and food) as a natural preservative, but can also be used as an anti-blemish treatment.

Preservatives Used:

  • Potassium Sorbate: Natural | EWG Score: 2
  • Tocopherol/vitamin E: Natural | EWG Score: 1
  • Thyme Oil: Natural | EWG Score: 1
  • Citric Acid: Natural | EWG Score: 1-2

Concerning Ingredients
  • Potassium Sorbate: Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid and can be derived from natural sources such as fruits. It is used primarily as a preservative instead of parabens because of its strong antimicrobial anti-fungal properties. Potassium sorbate has caused some controversy because of evidence that it can cause irritation due to allergic reactions in rare cases. There is scant evidence, however, that the low concentrations used in skin care (below .5%) create a high risk for skin irritation. (source | source)

PRODUCT DESIGN & EFFECTIVENESS
a_plus_score_icon-min

Overall, the Red Algae Mask earns a Product Design & Effectiveness Score of an “A+”. The Red Algae Mask scored highly in a number of areas. First, the mask comes pre-mixed and ready to use out of the jar. This makes it very easy to just grab and apply without the need to mix powder with water. When you first open the jar, there is no denying the herbal/tea tree scent. It’s not overpowering, just noticeable. The Red Algae Mask has a silky, slightly elastic cream texture that’s not too thick and not too thin. It’s easy enough to apply using your finger or a facial mask brush. The jar is small (only 1.7 oz), but the texture of the mask makes it easy to apply a thin layer (making a little go a long way). It has a slightly cool sensation upon application which is refreshing. The best part of the Red Algae Mask is that it is truly a non-drying facial mask. Meaning, it doesn’t harden and overly dry-out the skin like a clay mask would. Instead, this organic mask still feels like a soft cream even while “dry”. After using the mask ask directed (2x/week and as a spot treatment when appropriate), our reviewers reported significant improvement in active blemishes and a reduction in recurrent blemishes. The mask did a fantastic job at reducing excess oil while maintaining hydration. The vast majority of our reviewers reported experiencing “softer,” “hydrated,” and “clearer” looking skin after two weeks of use.

Product Effectiveness Summary

Ease of Use: A super easy mask to work into any routine. The mask comes pre-mixed and ready-to-use right out of the box (no need for mask bowls or measuring spoons). Can be worn for as little as 5 minutes in a time crunch.
