When it comes to organic moisturizers, few products have achieved the cult-following status that May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon has garnered over the years. Touted by beauty bloggers and experts as the best organic moisturizer on the market, there is no shortage of hype surrounding the Blue Cocoon. With all of this fanfare (and the luxury price tag), one has to wonder…is the Blue Cocoon really worth the hype? Is the formula actually all natural, organic, and clean? Which skin types should consider the Blue Cocoon and which should avoid it? Can sensitive skin types use the Blue Cocoon? What about acne-prone skin types? To us, there is no better way to answer these questions than to actually experience the product first hand. We got our hands on a fresh batch of May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon and  tested it for two weeks with our review team. As a part of that process, our team thoroughly researched every ingredient, analyzed hundreds of real customer reviews, and faithfully used the product as instructed to bring you this comprehensive review.

In summary, our team was quite impressed with this blue balm from May Lindstrom. Regarding ingredients, the Blue Cocoon earned our highest Clean Ingredient Score for its truly natural, organic, and wildcrafted formula. This beauty balm is formulated with powerful real plant ingredients that anyone can understand. The texture of the balm is quite close to perfect: existing somewhere between a lightweight facial oil and a nourishing balm. Regardless of how you describe it, the balm melts easily into the skin and absorbs without a trace of greasiness. When it comes to results, the Blue Cocoon definitely did a great job at balancing moisture, soothing irritation, and softening skin for a variety of skin types.

Below, you’ll find a complete summary of our in-depth two week review of May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon balm. Our reviews are organized into three categories: The Clean Ingredient Score (is the product made with clean ingredients?), Product Design & Effectiveness Score (does it actually work?), and the Online Customer Review Score (what is everyone else saying?). Combined, this review should provide everything you need to decide if the Blue Cocoon is right for you. Enjoy!

CLEAN INGREDIENT SCORE
a_plus_score_icon-min

May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon organic beauty balm has earned an impressive Clean Ingredient Score of an “A+” for its 100% natural, organic, wildcrafted, fair-trade, and high-grade unrefined formula. The Blue Cocoon is made with 12 ingredients of which 7 are certified organic, 3 are wildcrafted, and 2 are raw/unrefined. Because this formula contains naturally anti-microbial and anti-fungal ingredients, it does not include traditional preservatives. Additionally, the Blue Cocoon is filler free–meaning every ingredient used is an active ingredient which contributes towards the effectiveness of the product. There are no hidden ingredients, no hidden fragrances, no-GMOs, no gluten, and nothing synthetic included in this formula. Lastly, due to European Union requirements, the brand lists components of essential oils (linalool, citronellol, geraniol, and limonene) on the ingredient label even though these are naturally occurring components of essential oils.

Clean Ingredient Summary

| 100% NATURAL | VEGAN | NON-GMO | CRUELTY FREE | GLUTEN FREE

Top Clean Ingredients

  • Blue Tansy Oil: Derived from the flower of the Moroccan blue tansy flower (also known as Moroccan chamomile), blue tansy oil has a bright blue hue and is often used for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Blue tansy is also thought to be a useful remedy for acne.
  • Marula Oil: Very high in antioxidants, marula oil is prized for its ability to heal acne without clogging pores. Marula oil has a similar consistency to your body’s own sebum, thus it absorbs easily.
  • Baobab Oil: A highly moisturizing oil that is packed with omega fatty acids, and vitamins A, D, E, and F for skin healing.

Preservatives Used:

  • None: Naturally preservative free.

Concerning Ingredients
  • Linalool: Linalool is a natural component of essential oil. Synthetic versions can possibly lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions (hence the EWG rating range of 3). Due to a change in labeling regulations, manufacturers are required to list linalool on ingredient labels even if only naturally present in essential oils and not isolated chemicals added to the formulation. • Geraniol: A natural compound of certain essential oils. While natural versions of geraniol have some anti-aging benefits, synthetic versions can possibly lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions (hence the EWG rating range of 3). Due to a change in labeling regulations in the EU, manufacturers are required to list geraniol on ingredient labels even if it only exists in the product as a natural constituent of essential oils contained within the product. (source | source)
  • Citronellol: A naturally occurring scent ingredient derived from plants such as rose, geranium and lemongrass. While natural versions have some skin benefits, synthetic versions can lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions (hence the EWG rating range of 3). Due to a change in labeling regulations in the EU, manufacturers are required to list citronellol on ingredient labels even if it only exists in the product as a natural constituent of essential oils contained within the product. • Limonene: A natural compound of certain essential oils. While natural versions of limonene have some benefits, synthetic versions can possibly lead to skin irritation or allergic reactions (hence the EWG rating range of 4-5). Due to a change in labeling regulations in the EU, manufacturers are required to list limonene on ingredient labels even if it only exists in the product as a natural constituent of essential oils contained within the product. (source | source)

PRODUCT DESIGN & EFFECTIVENESS
a_plus_score_icon-min

May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon easily earns a Product Design & Effectiveness Score of an “A+”. Our trial of The Blue Cocoon lasted a full two weeks and the product was used alongside May Lindstrom’s Jasmine Garden Toning Mist and The Clean Dirt Exfoliating Powder. While we rarely comment on the packaging and “unboxing” experience of a product, our reviewers felt compelled to note that May Lindstrom’s products arrived “meticulously” packaged with “impeccable” detail and luxury.

The Blue Cocoon itself comes packaged in a heavy black glass jar with a tight seal to prevent leaks. The formula is very delicate and changes consistency from a balm to an oil with temperature fluctuations (we kept the jar refrigerated in between uses for the perfect consistency). The formula is so delicate, in fact, that it almost instantly melts upon contact with the skin. The first thing of note about the Blue Cocoon is it’s distinct scent; a sweet combination of blue tansy, vanilla, and floral notes. Our reviewers described the scent as “unmistakable,” “pleasant,” and “like sweet herbs.” The next thing worth noting is the craftsmanship of the Blue Cocoon. The formula is perfectly smooth, non-greasy, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t separate even as it transitions from a liquid to a balm-like consistency.

As for results, the Blue Cocoon claims to be a good option for those with sensitive, dry, irritated, and even acne-prone skin. Across all claims, our reviewers reported positive experiences. All skin types found the Blue Cocoon to be hydrating and non-greasy. Although this balm is technically a facial oil, our combination, oily, and acne-prone reviewers did not report any greasiness or heaviness. Regarding absorption, some drier skin types reported that they much preferred applying the balm onto moist skin (after cleansing or toning) as opposed to dry skin. When applied to dry skin, it may not absorb as optimally as when applied to moist skin.

The Blue Cocoon received the highest scores from our dry, mature, normal, and combination skin types, followed by oilier skin types, and then sensitive skin types. While the majority of our sensitive skin reviewers provided high scores for the Blue Cocoon, a few reviewers with exceptionally sensitive skin did report some redness around delicate areas like the mouth and eyes. Overall, the Blue Cocoon does provide hydration, softens skin, soothes redness, calms inflammation, and helps to control acne breakouts.

Product Effectiveness Summary

Works Best For: All skin types.

Official Usage Instructions: Melt a rice grain to pea-sized amount into fully wet skin, morning and night, immediately after cleansing. Focus on areas of sensitivity and the delicate eye contour.

Ease of Use: Easy to incorporate into an existing routine as a moisturizer, serum, eye treatment, and spot treatment. A very versatile product that blends well with other skin care products.

ONLINE CUSTOMER REVIEW SCORE
a_minus_score_icon-min

Our team analyzed 311 real online customer reviews for the May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon from 7 different online retailers (including stores like Follain, Detox Market, Aillea, and Petit Vour). Across all retailers, the Blue Cocoon earned an average customer review of 4.5/5 stars–earning a grade of “A-” for our Online Customer Review Score. No matter how you look at it, a product with a price tag of $180 is going to elicit high expectations. We don’t comment on price in our reviews (because affordability is subjective), but we will say that price is definitely one of the most discussed facets of this product in user reviews. On the positive side, many users expressed a true belief in the product with some calling it ” the holy grail,” “obsessive,” and “worth every penny.” The most positive reviews come from customers claiming to have dry skin and inflamed skin. They describe the product as “hydrating,” “moisturizing,” “softening,” and that it “melts into my skin.” There are also positive reviews from sensitive skin types who described their skin as “highly reactive,” but experienced no issues with the Blue Cocoon. Another point of contention, in addition to the price, amongst customers appears to be the scent of the Blue Cocoon. Whereas some customers describe the scent as “intoxicating,” others described it as “weird.” See Pros & Cons for more details.
