OSEA Malibu’s Atmosphere Protection Cream claims to be a lightweight organic moisturizer capable of providing all day hydration in any climate. Does Atmosphere Protection Cream actually deliver on these promises? Are the ingredients in this moisturizer really safe, organic, and all natural as they claim to be? Which skin types work best with the Atmosphere Protection Cream? Should anyone avoid this moisturizer? To answer these questions (and many more), we tested this popular moisturizer from OSEA for two weeks. During our trial, we researched every ingredient, and analyzed thousands of real customer reviews from all over the internet to bring you this comprehensive review.

All in all, we were quite impressed with the Atmosphere Protection Cream. Although the consistency is quite thin, the formula is surprisingly hydrating. For normal, combination, and slightly drier skin types, the Atmosphere Protection Cream can work great as a standalone moisturizer. On the other hand, very dry skin types may find that they need more hydration than this lightweight formula. The cream is marketed as a excellent makeup primer, and we have to agree with that claim. The non-greasy matte finish that this moisturizer leaves behind creates the perfect surface for smooth makeup application.

Below, you’ll find a complete summary of our in-depth two week review of OSEA Malibu’s Atmosphere Protection Cream. Our reviews are organized into three categories: The Clean Ingredient Score (is the product made with clean ingredients?), Product Design & Effectiveness Score (does the product actually work?), and the Online Customer Review Score (what is everyone else saying?). Combined, this review should provide everything you need to decide if the Atmosphere Protection Cream is right for you. Enjoy!

Where to Buy?

The Osea Malibu Atmosphere Protection Cream has earned a Clean Ingredient Score of an “A”. This organic moisturizer is cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan, and made with all-natural and organic ingredients. Organic ingredients contained within this formula include Osea’s signature algae extract, macadamia seed oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil, calendula, chamomile, lavender oil, geranium oil, and grapefruit peel oil. The Atmosphere Protection Cream lost points for its preservative system, potassium sorbate, and for the use of grapefruit peel oil. Potassium sorbate is a naturally-derived food-preservative and grapefruit peel oil is the essential oil of grapefruit rinds. Both ingredients have been linked to skin irritation in high concentrations. Osea Malibu uses very low concentrations of both ingredients (both appearing at the bottom of the ingredient list as the last two ingredients–indicating low quantity relative to the other ingredients on the list). During our two week review, the Skin Care Ox team experienced no signs of irritation while trialing the Atmosphere Protection Cream on a variety of skin types.

Clean Ingredient Summary

Top Clean Ingredients

  • Algae Extract: Chlorophyll containing ocean dwelling organisms. Contains a plethora of potent vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Known for its ability to help skin retain a lot of moisture (an alternative to hyaluronic acid).
  • Macadamia Seed Oil: Like jojoba, the oil of the macadamia nut seed has similar properties to your skin’s natural sebum. It’s a lightweight oil that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and fast absorbing. Packed with omega fatty acids, vitamin E, antioxidants, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory phytosterols.
  • Avocado Oil: A rich carrier oil derived from the seeds of avocados. Commonly used in skin care due to it’s high omega fatty acid, mineral, and vitamin A, D, and E content.
  • Lavender Oil: An essential oil made from lavender flowers that is best known for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and skin soothing properties.

Preservatives Used:

  • Potassium Sorbate: Natural | EWG Score: 2
  • Tocopherol/Vitamin E: Natural | EWG Score: 1

Concerning Ingredients
  • Potassium Sorbate: Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid and can be derived from natural sources such as fruits. It is used primarily as a preservative instead of parabens because of its strong antimicrobial anti-fungal properties. Potassium sorbate has caused some controversy because of evidence that it can cause irritation due to allergic reactions in rare cases. There is scant evidence, however, that the low concentrations used in skin care (below .5%) create a high risk for skin irritation. (source | source)
  • Grapefruit Peel Oil: A highly potent essential oil derived from the rinds (skin) of grapefruit. It is composed of 95% limonene (a very fragrant component of essential oils) and is commonly used as a fragrance enhancer. The issue with grapefruit peel oil is that it contains furanocoumarins, compounds which are known to be photo-toxic (can cause irritation when exposed to sunlight). In low concentrations (listed at the bottom of the product’s ingredient list) this ingredient shouldn’t cause concern; however, at higher concentrations (listed near the top or middle of the product’s ingredient list) this ingredient can cause photo-toxicity and should be used only in night treatments. The Osea Malibu Atmosphere Protection Cream claims to be a lightweight moisturizer (+makeup primer) that protects skin against moisture loss caused by environmental conditions. In order to test these claims, the Skin Care Ox team used the Atmosphere Protection Cream as a daily moisturizer for two weeks. At the end of the trial, this organic moisturizer earned a Product Design & Effectiveness Score of an “A+” for it’s lightweight, yet super hydrating formula. The Atmosphere Protection Cream is indeed ultra-lightweight. It has a thin, water-based consistency that feels almost like a serum. The formula absorbs very quickly, leaves zero sheen, and doesn’t feel greasy. Instead, the cream left our skin feeling soft and moisturized. Testers with very dry skin scored the product highly as a moisturizer, but many chose to layer an oil or moisturizer on top for added hydration. Thus, it may not be the best stand-alone moisturizer for those with very dry, flaky, dehydrated skin. When it comes to scent, this moisturizer is practically unscented (it has a very light scent that is easy to miss). As a makeup primer, this cream moisturizer is one of the better natural products for all skin types. Because the Atmosphere Protection Cream is so lightweight and non-greasy, it works exceptionally well as a hydrating base for makeup.

Product Effectiveness Summary

Claims Not Met

  • Environmental Protection: The product claims to provide protection for your skin’s barrier from “extreme climates, wind and air pollution.” Our team was unable to test these claims during our trial.
