OSEA Malibu’s Essential Hydrating Oil has hundreds of online reviews claiming that this organic facial oil is indeed the “holy grail” of moisturizers. OSEA claims that that Essential Hydrating Oil is a clean, all natural formula, designed to add a boost of hydration to dry and sensitive skin types, but is the product really all that it’s made out to be? Is it worth the money? Are the ingredients in this facial oil actually rated as safe, organic, and all natural? Which skin types should try this product and which should avoid it? Can sensitive skin types really use this facial oil? After testing this product for a little over two weeks, we think we have some answers to those questions! During our trial, we scrutinized each and every ingredient, analyzed hundreds of real customer reviews, and faithfully used the product as instructed in order to bring you this comprehensive review.

Our overall takeaway of the Essential Hydrating Oil is that it is a very good option for dry and mature skin types that are looking for a deeply moisturizing product. While other skin types (such as combo and oily) also saw success using the Essential Hydrating Oil, the product received the highest scores from those with drier skin. The formula is comprised of all plant-based ingredients and oils such as macadamia, jojoba, bergamot, and geranium–making this a totally clean product. As a facial oil, it’s quite versatile and can be used before/after toners, serums, and moisturizers as needed. The Essential Hydrating Oil feels rich at first, but then absorbs easily and gradually settles to create a natural “glow” throughout the day. This facial oil also works great as a makeup primer—softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and creating a smooth surface.

Below, you’ll find a complete summary of our in-depth review of OSEA Malibu’s Essential Hydrating Oil. Our reviews are organized into three categories: The Clean Ingredient Score (is the product made with clean ingredients?), Product Design & Effectiveness Score (does the product actually work?), and the Online Customer Review Score (what is everyone else saying?). Combined, this review should provide everything you need to decide if the Essential Hydrating Oil is right for you. Enjoy!

Where to Buy?

Osea Malibu’s Essential Hydrating Oil earns a Clean Ingredient Score of an “A+” for their organic and all natural formula. This facial oil formula is non-gmo, vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty free. The Essential Hydrating Oil is made with 12 ingredients of which 7 are certified organic ingredients (macadamia seed oil, sesame seed oil, jojoba seed oil, lavender oil, geranium flower oil, lemon peel oil, and chamomile flower oil). There are no fillers in this facial oil and the first three ingredients are organic plant oils of macadamia, sesame, and jojoba oils. This formula is made with a blend of carrier and essential oils which have a naturally long shelf life; thus, only a bit of non-gmo vitamin E (tocopherol) is used for preservation.

Clean Ingredient Summary

Top Clean Ingredients

  • Macadamia Seed Oil: Like jojoba oil, the oil of the macadamia nut seed has similar properties to your skin’s natural sebum. It’s a lightweight oil that is non-clogging and fast absorbing. Packed with omega fatty acids, vitamin E, antioxidants, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory phytosterols.
  • Sesame Seed Oil: Derived form sesame seeds. Sesame oil has been used in skin care for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
  • Bergamot Fruit Oil: An oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, bergamot oil is commonly used for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and cicatrizant (wound healing) properties. It is also thought to help fade dark spots over time by helping skin pigments to evenly distribute.
  • Chamomile Flower Oil: Often touted for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, chamomile oil also has powerful antibacterial, wound healing, and antiseptic properties.
  • Rosewood Oil: Extracted from the Aniba rosaeodora trees from Peru and Brazil, rosewood oil is used in skin care for its antiseptic, wound healing, and anti bacterial properties. It’s wound healing/regenerative properties make rosewood oil a common ingredient in anti-aging skin care formulations.

Preservatives Used:

  • Tocopherol/vitamin E: Natural | EWG Score: 1
  • Note: This formula contains a blend of carrier and essential oils with naturally long shelf lives; thus, a strong preservation system is not used.

Overall, the Essential Hydrating Oil earns a Product Design & Effectiveness Score of an “A+” for its fast absorbing, non-greasy, and hydrating formula. The Essential Hydrating Oil comes in two packaging options: a rollerball applicator and a pump dispenser. The rollerball applicator version comes in a small, travel-sized, glass tube that is easy to take on the go. While the rollerball applicator is convenient, it wasn’t the most cost effective and easiest for daily use. It was too easy to dispense too much product using the rollerball (and you only need a little). The pump dispenser comes in a much larger 1 oz bottle and just one pump (or even a half pump) is that is needed to spread this product thoroughly around the face. The formula itself is very moisturizing and many of our reviewers noted that it can easily be worn on its own as a moisturizer (with or without a serum). It leaves a light protective layer on the skin that feels soft, but not tacky in any way. When it comes to the anti-aging benefits of this facial oil, we did not experience any permanent reduction in the signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots; However, some reviewers did report that their fine lines and wrinkles were visibly reduced while wearing the product. This could be because the rich oils in the formula settle into wrinkles, making skin appear smoother. All but one of our testers enjoyed the scent of the Essential Hydrating Oil. The scent has a blend of both floral (geranium flower) and citrus (bergamot) notes. All testers, whether they enjoyed the scent or not, reported that the scent faded rather quickly after absorption.
