OSEA Malibu’s Advanced Protection Cream claims to be a rich organic anti-wrinkle moisturizer for dry, mature, and sensitive skin types capable of diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and providing all day hydration. There is a lot of hype around this luxuriously-priced moisturizer—but, is Advanced Protection Cream really all its made out to be? Are the ingredients in this moisturizer actually safe, organic, and natural as they claim to be? Is it really a great moisturizer for sensitive skin types?  Lucky for you, the Skin Care Ox team tested this popular moisturizer from OSEA for just over two weeks to get the answers to these questions. Our review trial included researching each ingredient, trying the product ourselves, and analyzing hundreds of online customer reviews to bring create this comprehensive review.

For dry and mature skin types without any sensitivities–we highly recommend the Advanced Protection Cream. There are many moisturizers out there that claim to be hydrating enough for dry skin types, but few actually live up to the promise like this cream from OSEA. Many of the Skin Care Ox reviewers live in the Rocky Mountain region which has a very dry climate. We loved how this moisturizer both quickly absorbed, but left a nice layer of protection over our skin that lasted all day. Our skin felt soft to the touch and looked glowing. For more sensitive skin types, this may not be the moisturizer for you. Although it is made with clean ingredients, some natural essential oils contained in this formula may be too sensitizing for some skin types.

For more details on our experience trying the Advanced Protection Cream, check out our summary below of our in-depth two week review. Our reviews are organized into three categories: The Clean Ingredient Score (is the product made with clean ingredients?), Product Design & Effectiveness Score (does the product actually work?), and the Online Customer Review Score (what is everyone else saying?). All together, this review should provide everything you need to decide if the Advanced Protection Cream is right for you. Enjoy!

Where to Buy?

The Osea Malibu Advanced Protection Cream has earned a Clean Ingredient Score of an “A”. This organic moisturizer is cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan, and made with natural and organic ingredients. Organic ingredients contained within this formula include safflower seed oil, glycerin, sunflower seed oil, aloe leaf juice, macadamia seed oil, lemon seed oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, calendula extract, chamomile extract, and Osea’s signature red algae gigartina skottsbergii. The Advanced Protection Cream uses lemon seed essential oil, which, although natural and generally considered safe, can be irritating to some sensitive skin types with aversions to citrus essential oils. Although the Advanced Protection Cream formula is clean and contains gentle ingredients–it did lose a few points in our stringent review system for its use of capryloyl glycine (a safe synthetic amino acid which functions as a conditioning agent or surfactant in cosmetic formulas).

Clean Ingredient Summary

Top Clean Ingredients

  • Algae Extract: Chlorophyll containing ocean dwelling organisms. Contains a plethora of potent vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Known for its ability to help skin retain a lot of moisture (an alternative to hyaluronic acid).
  • Macadamia Seed Oil: Like jojoba, the oil of the macadamia nut seed has similar properties to your skin’s natural sebum. It’s a lightweight oil that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and fast absorbing. Packed with omega fatty acids, vitamin E, antioxidants, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory phytosterols.
  • Avocado Oil: A rich carrier oil derived from the seeds of avocados. Commonly used in skin care due to it’s high omega fatty acid, mineral, and vitamin A, D, and E content.
  • Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline: A collagen-boosting compound derived from hydrolyzed gelatin. It is commonly found in anti-aging cosmetics because it aids in the synthesis of collagen, has antioxidant properties, and protects elastin bonds.

Preservatives Used:

  • Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate: Natural | Preservative | EWG Score: 1

The Advanced Protection Cream claims to be a rich organic moisturizer that provides all day hydration, softens fine lines and wrinkles, and protects against moisture loss. We wanted to put this luxury seaweed moisturizer to the test and trialed the Advanced Protection Cream amongst a number of skin types for a little over two weeks. At the end of the trial, this organic moisturizer earned a Product Design & Effectiveness Score of an “A”. First impressions of the Advanced Protection Cream were positive: it has a surprisingly thin, yet rich consistency and a light, indistinguishable scent. We used this moisture on its own and with a serum, and the product absorbed well even when layered over a heavy serum or facial oil. Dry skin and mature skin reviewers rated the Advanced Protection Cream highly, while our sensitive skin reviewers had mixed reviews (one sensitive skin reviewer experienced very mild redness after a week of use). As for fine lines and wrinkles, the rich hydrating texture does actually do a good job at softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping the skin. We can’t speak to any long-term anti-aging benefits from using this cream as a two week trial is insufficient for those purposes.

Product Effectiveness Summary

Works Best For: Dry skin, Mature Skin, Drier Combo Skin, Dehydrated Skin

Official Usage Instructions:After cleansing skin, apply Advanced Protection Cream morning + night.

Ease of Use: Easy to incorporate into an existing routine as a daily moisturizer. The rich texture of this moisturizer makes it a great day or night cream. Layers easily over other skin care products.

Claims Not Met

  • Sensitive Skin: The product claims to be gentle enough for sensitive skin; however, our sensitive skin reviewer did experience some mild redness with extended use. Our best guess is that the concentration of lemon essential oil may be too high for those with very sensitive skin.
  • Dark Spots: Our reviewers did not report any reduction in hyperpigmentation or dark spots during the review trial.

We analyzed 358 customer reviews for the Osea Malibu Advanced Protection Cream from 10 different online retailers (including stores like Detox Market, Amazon, Neiman Marcus, Petit Vour, and Follain). On the positive side, dry skin and combination skin customers raved that this moisturizer richly hydrates their skin. Positive review notes include loving the texture of the cream, enjoying how fast it absorbs, and notes about how the Advanced Protection Cream is good for nighttime use. Negative comments included notes about experiencing breakouts with use, a lack of hydration, dry skin, and irritation for sensitive skin types. See Pros & Cons for more details.
